2021 Victories

We are where we are thanks to your hard work, dedication, and commitment to our ocean, beaches and waves! Let’s celebrate some 2021 highlights:

  • We participated in the largest ever shoreline cleanup effort on the BC coast, partnering with other environmental non-profits and First Nations to remove hundreds of tons of debris from the West Coast of Vancouver Island. We are so proud of all we achieved together this year!

  • The Ocean Plastic Depot at the West Coast Landfill diverted more than 20 TONNES of plastic debris from landfill in its pilot year! We’re so excited to continue developing this site and create more exciting local circular recycling solutions for marine debris!

  • We partnered with Tourism Tofino on their Washed Up Wednesdays Campaign, collecting more than 5000 items from local beaches and recording their efforts through the Marine Debris Tracker for citizen science! We continue to support business leadership in environmental stewardship, including Long Beach Lodge’s Beach Clean Bag initiative, and Pacific Sands’ Marine Debris Bin!

  • Supporting the development of a localized circular economy, including partnerships with Drift Mfg (Styrofoam Surfboards), Sea Woven (recycled rope artwork), Pete Clarkson (marine debris artist), and Shred (neoprene recycling).

  • We recycled more than ONE MILLION CIGARETTE BUTTS, and commissioned local shaper Some Sea Co to create a cigarette butt surfboard to celebrate -The Dart Board!

  • Signed up 15 more local businesses to Ocean Friendly Businesses program

  • Cut the Cutlery Victory, working with the Districts of Tofino and Ucluelet to create a new by-law banning single use plastic cutlery - this will be adopted in early 2022!

  • Take Back the Tap Campaign installed 2 water dispensers one near the Ucluelet Aquarium and one in the Tofino Village Green.

  • Foam Free dock campaign started and will continue with support for Blue Friday fundraising efforts! Let’s get EPS foam docks out of our waters!
